Richardson Grove redwoods get reprieve
August 2011
Our last issue of The Ventana contained an article about Caltrans wanting to widen Highway 101 in Humboldt County, a project which would threaten old-growth redwoods in Richardson Grove State Park. In July U.S. District Judge William Alsup of San Francisco issued an injunction which has blocked the project. The injunction prohibits Caltrans from awarding or soliciting contracts for the project until after the case is heard in court.
The delay means that the project could not begin in January 2012 as scheduled. The judge has scheduled a hearing on December 1 to decide whether more environmental studies must be done including consideration of alternatives to the project. Suggested alternatives include reducing speeds on the existing narrow roadway and having one-way traffic at night to enable large trucks to use both lanes of the 22-foot wide road which has tight curves.
