On January 31, 1966, about 75 local members gathered in the Community Room of the Santa Cruz Branch of the Salinas Valley Savings and Loan Association to learn about establishing a regional group of the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club. At the first election in September, 1966, Philippa Pfeiffer was elected Chair. By the end of the year membership had grown to 229.

It soon became apparent that Santa Cruz had more in common environmentally with the newly-formed Ventana Chapter than with the folks over the hill. As a result, discussions were initiated in 1974 for transfer of affiliation with the change being effected in January, 1975. Group membership is now about 3,600.

Significant conservation milestones:

Imagine how different the Central Coast would be if these battles had not been won.

> Preventing both an oil refinery and a oil tanker berth at Moss Landing.
> Dune protection from Del Monte Beach northward.
> Prevention of a dam which would have flooded the Arroyo Seco Gorge.
> Thwarting PG&E’s proposal to construct a nuclear power plant just north of Davenport.
> Establishment of the Monterey Peninsula Parks & Open Space District.
> Preservation of Wilder Ranch and Gray Whale Ranch as State Parks.
> Passage of the Greenbelt Initiative in Santa Cruz.
> Purchase of the Pogonip, Moore Creek Uplands, and Arana Gulch Greenbelt properties by the City of Santa Cruz.
> Stopping of the Hatton Canyon Freeway and establishment of Hatton Canyon State Park.
> Preservation of the Coast Dairies property along the North Coast.
> Preservation of O’Neill Ranch, South Ridge of Quail Hollow Quarry, and Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve in Santa Cruz County.

We build our future on the efforts of those who came before us.
