The Sierra Club Bookstore is the place to find quality book gifts, pre-selected for their environmental slant.

There’s a Hair in My Dirt: a Worm’s Story,” by Gary Larson, creator of “The Far Side,” is just one of the great children’s nature books available at the Sierra Club Bookstore in Carmel. This cartoon book was a New York Times best-seller.

My favorite is “The Snail House,” by Lillian Ahlberg. It is an enchanting tale of a boy and girl who magically dwindle to the size of a friendly snail they visit. This book has appealingly old-fashioned illustrations by Gillian Taylor.

Another charmer is “Two Bear Cubs,” a Miwok legend about two Yosemite cubs stuck atop a towering cliff. It is retold by Robert D. San Souci and illustrated by his brother Daniel San Souci. It is suitable to read aloud.

Is there a young rebel in your family who shuns reading for more active play? You might awake reading interest with “Gross But True Creatures,” which describes “disgusting habits” (the author’s words, not mine) of certain animals and insects. The book by Luann Columbi comes with a plastic slug that will cling to walls!

For more serious nature study, look at the “Guide to Birds, Nests, and Eggs,” a take-along guide by Mel Boring, brightly illustrated by Linda Garrow.

The Sierra Club bookstore is located on Ocean Avenue, upstairs mid-block between San Carlos and Dolores Avenues in Carmel. It’s staffed by welcoming volunteers from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
