Club negotiating with American Youth Hostels to manage Clair
Tappaan Lodge
At press time the Sierra Club was in the final stages of negotiating with the
Golden Gate Council of American Youth Hostels to manage the popular Clair Tappaan
Lodge in Norden, California, near Donner Summit. The decision is the result of
a two-year planning process designed to make the lodge economically self-sufficient.
Currently Clair Tappaan is operating at a loss.
A public meeting was scheduled for April 12 in San Francisco. Issues being discussed
include the no-alcohol policy of American Youth Hostels and the provision of shared
kitchen space for guests in addition to the Lodge-prepared meals.
If the agreement is signed, the management arrangement would be reevaluated after
a few years. If no agreement can be reached, the lodge could be sold.
