TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
BASIC MANAGEMENT OF SUDDEN OAK DEATH
ON FORESTLANDS
Sampling, Recognition, Survey, and Mitigation Measures
This class is open to anyone interested in attending, including Registered Professional
Foresters (RPF’s), personnel with the California Department of Forestry
and Fire Protection (CDF), USDA Forest Service, County Agriculture Departments,
arborists, landscapers, and others working with and managing oaks. The class will
combine lecture and field exercises in sampling and notification procedures, symptom
recognition, survey and GPS protocol, and mitigation measures. The latest information
on Sudden Oak Death regulations will also be presented.
Presented by California Oak Mortality Task Force (COMTF), USDA Forest Service
(USDA-FS), California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), and University of California Cooperative
Extension (UCCE).

From any direction:
- Take Highway 17 to the Mt. Hermon exit.
- Go west to the end of Mt. Hermon Road and turn left at Graham Hill Road.
- Drive a short distance to East Zayante Road. On your right is the Felton Bible
Church, this is where you will park and carpool.
- Carpool drivers will receive directions here on how to proceed to Camp May-Mac.

Lodging: To facilitate day travel and minimize the number of
necessary overnight stays during these tight budgetary times, we have shortened
the training session and will be offering a northern training session this spring
as well as one in the Bay Area.

- 10:00 a.m. Welcome – Purpose of session, overview of day, housekeeping
- 10:05 Brief Overview of Sudden Oak Death
- 10:20 Recognizing Phytophthora ramorum – What to look for
- 11:15 Status of Quarantine/Regulations and Mitigating Measures, Followed by
Questions and Answers on Enforcement
- 12:00 p.m. Lunch (bring sack lunch)
- 12:30 Go to Field Location
- 12:45 Field Session: Camp May-Mac, Felton
Participants will be grouped according to the number noted on each person’s
nametag and rotated through five 30-minute stations for various hands-on activities.
- Station 1 - Bole sampling
Sampling, preparing sample, mailing, explanation of the lab process
- Station 2 - Foliar sampling
Sampling, symptom recognition, filling out Pest Detection Report, notifying
County Agricultural Commissioner, and gathering location information
- Station 3 - GPS protocol
Bring your GPS unit. Set standards and practice recording a waypoint.
- Station 4 - Survey methods
> Early detection, distribution surveys
> Detection/Transects – Is P. ramorum there or not
> Impacts/Plot-based method – Determine level of disease
> Inspection protocol
- Station 5 - Questions, answers, and a snack

Credits applied for from California Department of Pesticide Regulation (1 hour
Laws and Regulations, 4 hours other), and Society of American Foresters (5 hours
of Category 1 credits) as well as the International Society of Arboriculture.
Regulations and good sanitation practices will be observed--plant materials will
not be taken off-site.
